Happy Anniversary
The Walkman turns 25!And a society turns inward. Think about it. . .the walkman allowed us to not entirely focus on our surroundings and minimized our interaction with each other; the cell phone does the same, to an even greater degree. . .now we talk into our new walkman any where any time, we don't even need to speak with each other and here is the big plus: we don't have to be left alone with our troubling thoughts. If the car stereo doesn't eliminate that sense of loneliness et. al., we can always drown out concerns with a phone call to ANYONE from the interstate. Interesting, it works on so many levels. It isolates us from strangers with new/other information yet brings us together to share our familiarities/inanities. What could be so important that you neeed to whip it out in Target. Do you really need neeed need to know, at that very second, at that damn moment, whether turnips are acceptable to yr loved one's palate? Shouldn't you know this already? yes, you do, but consider the alternative; you might have to say "Thank You" to the cashier. Scaredy Cat. PUt it away. wait till you get home.
