"Rip It Up and Start AGain: Postpunk 1978-1984"
I had no idea that what I was listening to was so anti-rock, anti-punk. PiL, Gang of Four, Flipper. . .Throbbing Gristle, Pere Ubu, Mission of Burma. . .I was under the impression it was all punk. I always liked the more sonically interesting bands during my hardcore years (1983-1986, with a year off in 1985. . .Army); Minutemen, No Trend, Sonic Youth,Tragic Mulatto. Not to disrespect any of the straight on Rawk bands I also listened to- they had their place in the pantheon--there was just something "generic" about a lot of them. I guess I lost interest in postpunk when bands like New Order and other fey synth bands came to the forefront. This book casts new light on some of them. I mean who knew the Human League had such interesting artisitc roots? Not I. Thanks to Jesse Thorn at "The Sound of Young America" for turning me on to this one!
